Forever Labs, a stem cell bank in Ann Arbor, Michigan

About Forever Labs

Forever Labs banks your own adult stem cells so that you still have them decades from now. It is a storage company rather than a treatment clinic, and it is worth being clear about that up front. Cells are collected from bone marrow or fat, processed at the company's lab in Ann Arbor, and held in cryogenic storage under your name. The collection itself does not happen in Ann Arbor. Forever Labs works through a network of board certified physicians in California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Washington and Washington DC, mostly orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians and physiatrists who already perform bone marrow aspiration. The draw is taken from the back of the hip under local anesthetic and takes roughly fifteen minutes. Most people describe a few seconds of pressure at the moment of withdrawal. The sample then ships to Ann Arbor, where the lab isolates the cells, runs flow cytometry to confirm identity and purity, screens for microbial contamination by qPCR, tests for endotoxin, and freezes the vials. The lab is the part of this that stands up to scrutiny. It was accredited in April 2020, the first biobank anywhere to hold an ISO accreditation covering human stem cell banking, and the company describes it as the only ISO certified adult stem cell processing laboratory in the United States. Isolation work is done in Class II biological safety cabinets. Forever Labs is currently building out a cGMP compliant facility and has said it intends to offer physician directed expansion of stored passage zero cells, a process that takes two to six weeks in culture. Pricing is published rather than quoted at a consultation, which is unusual in this market. A membership is $3,000 with $300 a year after the first year, or $10,000 once with storage for life. Both include the collection and the cryopreservation, and both are HSA and FSA eligible. The company was founded in Ann Arbor in 2015 by Mark Katakowski, Ben Buller, Laith Farjo and Steven Clausnitzer, and went through Y Combinator in 2017. It was the first company to sell adult stem cell banking directly to consumers. Katakowski and Clausnitzer left in May 2025 to run a spinout called SuperShot. Kevin Virgil, a client since 2019, has been chief executive since then.

MD, physical medicine and rehabilitation

Nabity graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine in 2004 and has practiced for more than twenty years, working mainly with patients in chronic pain who want alternatives to surgery and long term medication. He founded the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine in 2017 and still sees patients there. He joined the Forever Labs physician network the same year and banked his own cells then, several years before taking the chief medical officer role.

KV

Kevin Virgil

Chief Executive Officer

West Point graduate

Virgil became chief executive in May 2025, after the founders left to run the SuperShot spinout. He came to the company as a client, banking his own cells in 2019 and later using them for knee osteoarthritis. Before Forever Labs he covered biotech and healthcare at UBS, founded a security software company called Polysentry, and served in the Army, including with the 75th Ranger Regiment and in US government postings abroad. He has said his focus is moving the company from a biobank toward a regenerative manufacturing platform.
